Abstract
An account is given of the first findings of small mammals in the Megalopolis lignite basin as well as the results of palynological investigations. These studies demonstrate that a well-marked change of the climate took place towards the end of the Villanyian (MN 17) in the eastern Mediterranean area; this is correlated with the beginning of the Eburonian of the northwest European glaciated area (about 1.6 million years B.P.) The palynological investigation of the stratigraphic sequence permitted a new "Megalopolis pollen assemblage" to be constructed for the eastern Mediterranean area, which, in contrast to the Akça pollen assemblage, is characterized by an empoverishment in or lack of several typical Tertiary forms.
