On the age of the dinosaur fauna from the Lameta Formation (Upper Cretaceous of Central India)

Abstract
The Lameta Formation of Central India, which directly underlies the Deccan Traps, is often referred to the Turonian. The main reason for this age assignment is the interpretation of the Lameta dinosaur fauna put forward by HUENE & MATLEY in 1933. A review of the available evidence concerning the affinities and probable biostratigraphic position of the dinosaurs from the Lameta Formation shows that their exact geological age is not easy to determine, because comparison with well dated dinosaur faunas from other pans of the world is difficult. Nevertheless, it appears that there is no firm evidence to refer them to the Turonian; a later, probably Maastrichtian, age is more likely, and in better agreement with other palaeontological and physical evidence suggesting a latest Cretaceous age for the Lameta Formation.
