Abstract
The objective of this paper is to present the progress made during the last few years in our understanding of biostratigraphy of important Paleocene-Eocene sections exposed at stratotypes of Subathu and Dharamsala, located in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. These fossiliferous sections, time transgressive as they are, show evidences of continuous deposition in a narrow subsiding shelf, during the crucial period of drift of the Indian Plate and its subsequent collision. The highlight of our investigations generally point to changes in lithofacies, faunal and paleoecological elements across the apparent boundaries spanning Paleocene-Eocene times. Moreover, a complex environment involving both marine and non-marine paleoecological niches is reflected by a diverse community structure.
