Abstract

The real precise stratigraphic correlations throughout the Lower Callovian between the Indo-East-African and Submediterranean provinces of the Tethyan realm are established for the first time. The correlation is based on the ammonoid fauna of Kachchh (Western India) and West-Central France, notably by discovery of common species at several successive levels. The correlation between the two Tethyan provinces (put together) on one hand and the Subboreal province on the other is examined, also, in a broad manner in the light of new results. The rarity and restricted stratigraphical distribution of the immigrant species into the other province compared to their frequency and longer range in their original province suggest expansion of many species and ammonoid families inside the Tethyan realm which is found much more facilitated during the course of two periods corresponding with eustatic rise of sea level. In addition, the evolutionary lineages within the family Macrocephalitidae responsible for the development of three distinct stocks in the three bioprovinces under consideration here also have been discussed.
