Abstract
A standard stratigraphic framework is established for the so-called chaotic pre-Jurassic sedimentary rocks in the western parts of Turkey and the name Diskaya Formation is applied to these rocks. The Late Triassic Diskaya Formation consists of the coherent stratigraphic units of turbidites of low- and high-density origin, mass-flow deposits of reworked submarine volcanic rocks and a great variety of olistostromes, between which depositional relations can be demonstrated. Olistostromes contain blocks of platform-type and pelagic rocks and ophiolitic rocks. Obscure stratigraphy and complex internal structure, which are widely developed in places, are the result of interrelated events of mass-wasting, resedimentation and soft-sediment deformation. The Diskaya formation has been deposited on a slope floored by an older structural system primarily of low-grade metamorphic rocks, on which it transgressed.
