Abstract
Interval of beds No. 1 to 53 has been studied at the international Silurian/Devonian boundary stratotype at Klonk, in Central Bohemia. The depositional sequence has been found to be arranged with a microcycle periodicity; the high-carbonate peaks (beds) usually embrace 15 from the total number of 180 supersets of hemipelagic laminae occurring in one microcycle. A lesser content of turbidite and distal turbidite deposits has been found in comparison with some previous data. The hardgrounds, erosion and nondeposition surfaces occur, but generally the section represents the more continuous depositionary record with a potential for the finest stratigraphical studies. Prevailing rhythmic and hemipelagic deposition of the boundary bed No. 20, including a semi-lithified surface at the Silurian/Devonian boundary level, lasted for first thousands of years. A turbidite origin of the bed No. 20, which was formerly presumed by some authors, appears to be unsubstantiated.
