Zur Problematik chronostratigraphischer Korrelationen im mitteleuropäischen Rotliegend (? oberstes Karbon - Perm)
[Problems of chronostratigraphic correlation in the central European Rotliegend (? uppermost Carboniferous - Permian)]

Abstract

The chronostratigraphy of the European Rotliegend is currently very contradictory and confusing in terms of both nomenclature and correlations. This has numerous causes, some of which have a material basis (e.g. strong facies differences, paucity of fossils) and others are related to methodology. Standardization and refinement of the stratigraphic methods could result in important improvements. We suggest the following points: The completeness of the standard sections should be tested sedimentologically, and the taphonomic and ecological restrictions of potentially stratigraphically useful taxa must be assessed in order to generate reliable schemes of biostratigraphic zonation. Thorough taxonomic revisions of the respective fossil taxa should precede attempts at biostratigraphic zonation. The methods of representation, reconstruction, diagnosis, evaluation and naming should be standardized as far as possible. It is crucial to create a uniform, generally accepted lithostratigraphic and chronostratigraphic nomenclature. Circular reasoning and undue emphasis on certain stratigraphic methods or models should be avoided during correlation work.
