The first record of the ammonite genus Hybonoticeras from the Himalaya and its biostratigraphic significance

Pathak, D. B.

Abstract

The occurrence of the ammonite genus Hybonoticeras BREISTOFFER with its type species H. hybonotum (OPPEL) is reported from Tethyan Himalaya for the first time. The specimen has been collected from the Spiti Shale Formation, 2 km north-west of the village Chichim (also known as Chickim) in the Lahaul-Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh, India. H. hybonotum (OPPEL) is an index species of the basal Tithonian hybonotum-Zone helping in identification of the Kimmeridgian/Tithonian boundary of the Himalaya region. The first detailed section of the Spiti Shale Formation from the Indian Himalaya is presented here.
