The Liassic brachiopod zones of the Middle-Atlas, Morocco. Comparison with the French North Tethyan zonation
Alméras, Yves
Abstract
The stratigraphical distribution of the multiplicate Terebratulids and Zeilleriids previously described by DUBAR (1942) and COLO (1952, 1953) and new collects of abundant brachiopods well located in the Middle and Upper Liassic series of the Folded Middle-Atlas and well dated by ammonites (or by brachiopod species the age of which is known in other areas), make it possible to propose a succession of 13 zones (with 4 interval zones) characterizing the Liassic of the Moroccan Middle-Atlas. This zonation is then compared with that established in the French North Tethyan realm. The comparison evidences the more or less easy faunal exchanges between the north and the south margins of the Western Tethys during the Liassic.
