Abstract

A new method to estimate numerical ages for mammalian paleofaunas is discussed and exemplified from Paleogene localities of southern France. The method is based on the relationships between the evolution of size of certain mammal lineages and the presupposed ages of the localities from a sequence defined in a given paleobiogeographical region. The estimated ages obtained for some localities lead to discuss their relative position in the West-European standard reference time scale of the levels. They also permit to calibrate this biochronological time scale.
