Abstract

A thick succession of about 1400 m of Triassic-Cretaceous age is well exposed in the Gebel Arif El-Naga area, north-eastern Sinai. The different lithostratigraphic units from the Triassic to Cretaceous of the Gebel Arif El-Naga area are described. The succession can be subdivided into seven formations: 7 - Sudr Formation of Campanian and Maastrichtian age, 6 - Themed Formation of Coniacian and Santonian age, 5 - Wata Formation of late Turonian age, 4 - Abu Qada Formation of early Turonian age, 3 - Halal Formation of Cenomanian age, 2 - Malha Formation of early Cretaceous age, 1 - Arif El- Naga Formation of middle Triassic age. The first formation (Arif El-Naga) of middle Triassic age is overlain unconformably by the Malha Formation of early Cretaceous age while its base is unexposed. The Sudr Formation of Campanian and Maastrichtian age is overlain conformably by Tertiary rocks (Esna Formation) of Paleocene age. The depositional environments of the different rock units are discussed according to their lithological characters and its faunal contents.
