The base of the Tetragraptus approximatus Zone at Mt. Hunneberg, S. W. Sweden: A proposed Global Stratotype for the Base of the Second Series of the Ordovician System

Zusammenfassung. Das Untere Ordovizium am Hunneberg in Västergätland im südwestlichen Schweden enthält artenreiche Graptolithen-, Conodonten- und Trilobitenfaunen in einer stratigraphisch vollständigen Abfolge. Wir schlagen das Profil von Diabasbrottet in diesem Gebiet als "Global Stratotype Section and Point" (GSSP) für die Basis der Zweiten Serie des Ordoviziums vor. Diese Grenze wird am ersten Auftreten des Graptolithen Tetragraptus approximatus im unteren Teil des Toyen Schiefers definiert. In der Abfolge von Diabasbrottet und in weiteren Profilen am Hunneberg tritt T. approximatus über einen biostratigraphischen Bereich von mehr als 7 m zusammen mit einer reichen Graptolithen-, Conodonten- und Trilobitenfauna auf. Die vorgeschlagene Grenze liegt in der Oelandodus elongatus - Acodus deltatus deltatus Subzone der Paroistodus proteus Conodontenzone und im unteren Teil der Megistaspis (P.) planilimbata Trilobitenzone.
Abstract
The Lower Ordovician at Mount Hunneberg in the Province of Västergötland, southwestern Sweden contains diverse graptolite, conodont, and trilobite faunas in a stratigraphically complete succession. It is here proposed to adopt the Diabasbrottet section in that area as the Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) for the base of the second series of the Ordovician System with the boundary placed at the level of first appearance of Tetragraptus approximatus which is in the lower part of the Toyen Shale. In this and adjacent sections, this graptolite species ranges through more than 7 m of shale and is associated with many biostratigraphically significant graptolite, conodont, and trilobite species. The proposed boundary level is in the Oelandodus elongatus - Acodus deltatus deltatus Subzone of the Paroistodus proteus Conodont Zone, and in the lower part of the Megistaspis (P.) planilimbata Trilobite Zone.
