Devonian events in northern Spain

García-Alcalde, Jenaro L.

Abstract

Very accurate stratigraphical correlations can be obtained from the study of widespread geological events. However most reputedly global Devonian events are known in pelagic fades alone. To demonstrate the global nature of the event broad recognition of their lithologic and biologic signals in the more extensive, and better represented neritic fades is at present sorely needed. The tectonic juxtaposition of bathymetrically distant parts of the same Devonian basin in the Cantabrian Mountains allows the identification of the more known events for the Period in both extreme fades realms, off-shore (Palentine Domain) and near-shore (Asturo-Leonian Domain). The lithologic and biologic signature, the duration and the dating of these Devonian events are described and discussed. Some of them are also observed in adjoining areas and comparisons are made. The naming of events is discussed and a system based on the use of the characterizing litho- and bio-events names is defended.
