Abstract

An account and new data are given on the distribution of early Falcitornoceras and Cheiloceras above the base of the Famennian in some sections of the Iberian Peninsula. The stratigraphic distributions of the species of these genera are compared with those reported from some condensed Moroccan and French sections of reference. New and published data make evident some difficulties concerning to the strict correlation and conceptual definition of the lowermost Famennian ammonoid zones of Phoenixites frechi and Cheiloceras verneuili. Finally, a new definition of the Falcitornoceras falciculum Zone is proposed.
