The Lower Cretaceous (Pre-Salt) lithostratigraphy of the Kwanza Basin, Angola

Bate, Raymond H.; Cameron, Nicholas R.; Brandao, Mario G. P.

Abstract

Neocomian to Aptian half-graben and sag-basin lacustrine sediments underlie Aptian Salt (Loeme Formation) of the Kwanza Basin, Angola. As no workable stratigraphy for this important succession exists, we here propose a formal stratigraphy for 1) the half-graben deposits of north Kwanza (Lukunga Shale and Lukunga Sandstone Formations); 2) the half-graben deposits of south Kwanza (the Denda Formation incorporating the Maculungo Shale, Maculungo Sandstone and Maculungo Salt Members); and 3) the offshore carbonate bank deposits (Falc’o Formation) and the overlying and in part time equivalent Aguia Formation. The Flamingo Volcanics Formation encompasses dateable water-lain volcanic ash and undated lavas. The sections described are all based on subsurface data, for which the designated type sections relate to drilled well sections.
