Abstract

The publication of the Guide is a result of international consultation about a number of basic questions of the stratigraphic classification and nomenclature. The text is a coherent and comprehensive whole which reflects an advanced stage of the efforts to arrive at a global stratigraphic unification a priori assumed when stratigraphy have been created. The Guide has many positive features in comparison with the individual works on the subject - it is exhaustive and at the same time brief, logic in most cases, and clear. It is accurate in the definitions of the stratigraphic categories and covers a wide spectrum of questions. The results are due not only to the world-wide geographic spread and erudition of the stratigraphers who worked systematically or sporadically during a period of 25 years. The Editorial Committee played also an important part in homogenizing the diverse views. I have a profound respect for the efforts and the persistence of the organizer of this forum.
