The Subgroup Lithostratigraphy and Maps of the IGCP Program 124 at their meeting in Gent and Brussels in March 1978 decided to compile a lithostratigraphic scheme for the NW-European Tertiary Basin as a basis for further discussion on facies development and palaeogeography in this region and to rationalize the flood of regional lithostratigraphic terms. The concept was to give for each region a standard lithological column representing the sequence in a position approximately 100 km basinwards of the Tertiary coastline. As a first step the subgroup identified several distinctive lithological marker horizons, which have a basinwide distribution and are considered to be essentially synchronous.
