A morphological study of the Cyclotella rossii from lakes, reservoirs and rivers of Karelia (Russia) has shown significant variability in the majority of quantitative features such as valve diameter, number of striae in 10 μm, number of central fultoportulae with, number of valve face l fultoportulae satellite pores, frequency of marginal fultoportulae, as well as arrangement, number of rimoportulae. Results support emendation of the diagnosis of Cyclotella rossii, referring C. kuetzingiana var. radiosa Fricke and C. palustris Genkal et Kulikovskiy as synonyms of this species, as well as specifying the ecology and distribution of C. rossii. C. rossii was most frequently found together with Aulacoseira ambigua, A. islandica, A. subarctica, A. tenella, Discostella stelligera and Handmannia comta.
