Phenotypic and molecular characterization of Exserohilum species from Iran

Abstract

In a taxonomic survey on the genus Exserohilum (Pleosporales, Ascomycota) in Iran, leaf samples were collected from plant species with leaf spot symptoms. Monosporic fungal cultures were established using a spore dilution method. Exserohilum isolates were characterized based on a combination of morphological features and sequence data from the ITS+5.8S rDNA region. In this study we report three species of Exserohilum viz. Exserohilum rostratum , E. turcicum and E. monoceras among which E. monoceras is newly recorded for the mycobiota of Iran from Echinochloa colona and Setaria sp. Exserohilum turcicum is newly reported on Sorghum halepense and Paspalum dilatatum in Iran; while, several new hosts are recorded for E. rostratum namely Aloe vera, S. bicolor, S. halepense, Oryza sativa and Saccharum officinarum in Iran. Setaria sp. and P. dilatatum are recorded as new hosts for E. monoceras and E. turcicum worldwide, respectively. We provide full descriptions and illustrations for each of the three species.
