Discovery of Ptilium crista-castrensis in a mixed forest stand with Picea abies, Larix decidua and Abies alba occupying an ubac (altitude range: 1320-1480 m) near the village of Roubion (département Alpes-Maritimes). This is the only known locality in the extreme south-east of France. Data concerning the climate, the substratum and the vegetation (vascular plants and bryophytes) of the station are given. Among the mosses associated with Ptilium, Cirriphyllum piliferum is also new to the bryoflora of the departement Alpes-Maritimes. Finally, an hypothesis (destruction of mountain forests by man in historical times) is proposed to explain the extreme rarity of Ptilium crista-castrensis in the Alpes-Maritimes.
