Typification and ultrastructural characterization of flagellate taxa from museum collections 1. Some Trachelomonas (Euglenophyta = Euglenozoa p.p.) from the Deflandre collections in Paris

Georges Deflandre's original material of the loricate euglenid flagellates Trachelomonas magdaleniana Deflandre, T. molesta Deflandre, T. spectabilis Deflandre and T. zorensis Deflandre has been examined using light or scanning electron microscopy. Lectotypes are designated under the botanical and zoological Codes of Nomenclature. Revised descriptions are provided for T. magdaleniana based on light microscopy, and T. zorensis based on scanning electron microscopy. The SEM examination of the type material of T. zorensis appears to be the first instance of an ultrastructural examination of historical type material of a flagellate taxon. Contrary to widespread perception this investigation shows that it is feasible and useful to re-examine historical type material of flagellate taxa. This agrees perfectly well with the fundamental role played by the type method in biological nomenclature, and confirms that this method is equally valuable for the flagellates.
