Abstract

The lichen flora of Menorca has been examined during three field trips in the years 1998 and 1999. Menorca has a great variety of geological substrata with limestone and siliceous rock such as mesozoic sandstone and palaeozoic shale. This causes a rich and diverse flora. 75 taxa are new to Menorca. Of these taxa 19 are new to the Balearic Islands: Arthonia spadicea, Byssoloma subdiscordans, Caloplaca atroflava, Caloplaca festivella, Collema crispum, Collema polycarpon, Dactylospora acarosporae, Lecanographa lyncea, Lecanora achariana, Lecanora cenisia, Lichenostigma rugosa, Pertusaria velata, Phlyctis argena, Physconia petraea, Ramalina mollis, Rinodina occulta, Roccella arnoldii, Roccella fuciformis and "Stemphylium" botryosum. The other 56 are: Acarospora umbilicata, Arthonia diploiciae, Arthothelium crozalsianum, Aspicilia intermutans, Bacidia arceutina, Bacidia auerswaldii, Bagliettoa parmigera, Bagliettoa parmigerella, Buellia disciformis, Buellia venusta, Caloplaca aegatica, Caloplaca biatorina, Caloplaca cerina, Caloplaca citrina, Caloplaca dalmatica, Caloplaca ferruginea, Caloplaca marina, Caloplaca ora, Caloplaca variabilis, Candelariella aurella, Cladonia cervicornis ssp. cervicornis, Diploschistes diacapsis, Dirina stenhammari, Evernia prunastri, Fulgensia fulgida, Heppia solorinoides, Lecanora muralis, Lecanora sambuci, Lepraria nivalis, Leprocaulon microscopicum, Leproloma membranaceum, Mycobilimbia sabuletorum, Opegrapha rupestris, Parmelia sulcata, Parmelina pastillifera, Parmotrema hypoleucinum, Pertusaria leucostoma, Phaeophyscia orbicularis, Physconia perisidiosa, Porpidia crustulata, Pyrrhospora quernea, Ramalina arabum, Ramalina farinacea, Ramalina panizzei, Ramalina pusilla, Ramalina requienii, Ramalina subgeniculata, Rhymbocarpus boomii, Sarcogyne regularis, Skyttea mayrhoferi, Sphinctrina leucopoda, Toninia physaroides, Toninia sedifolia, Verrucaria fuscella, Verrucaria nigrescens and Xanthoria elegans. 12 taxa formerly reported from Menorca were excluded from the current list. As a result the total number of species of lichens and lichenicolous fungi in Menorca is 217. Since the collected material has not been completely evaluated yet, it is likely that some new and interesting species could be found. The given list may serve as a preliminary checklist of the lichen flora of Menorca.
