To clarify the generic position of the species Tortula inermis and T. bolanderi, a molecular study based on the chloroplast gene rps4 and the rps4 - trn S spacer was performed. According to the molecular analysis, it seems to be indicated that Tortula and Syntrichia represent separate genera and that Tortula inermis and T. bolanderi should be included in the genus Tortula. The genetic proximity of T. inermis to T. subulata is demonstrated, T. bolanderi is more closely related to T. canescens.
