The ecology of Sphagnum denticulatum Brid. was studied in the Thermo-Mediterranean belt of the Southern Iberian Peninsula. This is the only species of Sphagnum to inhabit that bioclimatic belt. By applying a Factorial Correspondence Analysis and a phytosociological study to the relevés, we conclude that this species is present in at least three different habitats, which are clearly differentiated at edaphic and floristic levels. The relic presence of S. denticulatum in the Thermo-Mediterranean belt and its main environmental threats which affect the future viability of that species in the area are discussed.
