The morphology of 110 strains of Actinomucor was studied and molecular analyses of the seven representatives from these strains, including ex-type cultures of the two generally recognized species, A. elegans and A. taiwanensis, were made. As a result, A. taiwanensis is reduced to varietal rank under A. elegans and found to be synonymous with Mucor meitauzae which was published many years earlier. The new combination A. elegans var. meitauzae is proposed. A dried culture of a strain isolated from the same kind of substratum and the same locality as M. meitauzae is designated as neotype.
