A contribution to the phylogenetic study of Mielichhoferiaceae-Mniaceae (Bryophyta) based on molecular sequence data

A phylogenetic study of the genera included in the Mielichhoferiaceae and selected genera of Mniaceae, using the two cpDNA regions trnL-F and rps4 is presented. Our results suggest that the Mielichhoferiaceae are nested within the Mniaceae. The Bryaceae form a distinct lineage, with the species of Bryum section Amblyophyllum in a well-supported clade. In addition, the investigated sequences revealed that Schizymenium and Mielichhoferia are related to species of Pohlia section Pohlia, and that P. cruda is most likely isolated and basal in the Mielichhoferiaceae-Mniaceae clade. However, Pohlia sections Cacodon and Apalodictyon are well-supported in our study, the latter clade is sister of Epipterygium tozeri.
