Abstract

A taxonomic and nomenclatural history of Hypnum boreale F.Weber & D.Mohr [≡ Bryum boreale (F.Weber & D.Mohr) Schwägr.] is presented. A specimen from Norway collected by Ch.Schmid and preserved in the De Candolle herbarium at G is selected as lectotype of this species name. The lectotype specimen is described and its diagnostic characters are illustrated. It is shown that H. boreale belongs to the genus Ptychostomum Hornsch., a segregate of the broadly conceived genus Bryum Hedw., and the relevant new combination P. boreale (F.Weber & D.Mohr) Ochyra & Bednarek-Ochyra is made. Additionally, it is shown that this species is conspecific with P. pallescens (Schwägr.) J.R.Spence.
