Taxonomy and species diversity of the diatom genus Thalassiosira (Bacillariophyceae) in Zhejiang coastal waters, the East China Sea

Thalassiosira has been confirmed to be a very common genus in the Chinese coastal waters. However, the related studies were few and the species diversity could not be accessed accurately because most studies were performed under light microscope. For better understanding the morphological taxonomy and species diversity of Thalassiosira along the Zhejiang coastal waters (East China Sea), totally 52 net samples were collected from two locations. Field samples and nine established monoclonal strains were studied by light and electron microscope. The analysis revealed the presence of at least twenty-four species, including three new records for China, T. constricta, T. decipiens and T. fragilis, and eighteen new records for Zhejiang coastal waters. The morphological features of these Thalassiosira species were described, compared with previous illustrations in the literature and some morphological variations were reported and discussed. This study revealed a much higher species diversity of Thalassiosira than our previous understanding off Zhejiang coast and it may then serve as a baseline study for further studies on Thalassiosira in China and adds information to the global occurrence and taxonomy of Thalassiosira in temperate areas.
