This paper is a study of Rhynchostegium murale var. julaceum, which occurs in the Pyrenees at 1600–2000 m a.s.l. within the Iberian Peninsula. It is a conspicuous taxon with julaceous branches and very concave to cochleariform, very imbricate leaves. A morphological study indicates similarities of this taxon to R. murale var. subalpinum and R. m. var. arcticum. A comparison of ITS, trnL-F and trnD-T sequences with other European species of Rhynchostegium was conducted for phylogenetic reconstruction to clarify its taxonomic status and phylogenetic relationships. The synonymy of Rhynchostegium murale var. julaceum is given and the main distinctive characters that separate this variety from R. murale var. murale are discussed.
