A phytosociological numerical study of the vegetation above the timberline on Monte Baldo (N-Italy)

The vegetation of the summits of Monte Baldo (N-Italy) has been studied with the phytosociological method of Braun-Blanquet. Seven associations have been defined by numerical classification of the vegetation data: Potentilletum nitidae (pioneer vegetation of rock faces); Papaveretum rhaetici (pioneer vegetation of talus slopes); Salicetum retuso-reticulatae (vegetation of snow-beds); Seslerio-Caricetum sempervirentis and Ranunculus alpestris-Carex sempervirens association (alpine grasslands); Erico-Rhododendretum hirsuti and Vaccinio-Rhododendretum ferruginei (subalpine scrubs). The ecology of the grassland and scrub vegetation has been studied in detail by indirect gradient analysis and by direct measures of soil parameters. Remarkable inferences about history and vegetation dynamics have been drawn from the comparison of chorological and life-forms spectra for the different vegetation types.
