Abstract

Lichen vegetation on the wood of Pinus sylvestris L. stumps in the Netherlands was studied by the Braun-Blanquet method of phytosociology. Two vegetation types have been distinguished: the Hypogymnia physodes-Evernia prunastri-community on the cut-surface of relatively little decayed stumps, and the Cladonietum glaucae un. nov. (Cladonion arbusculae Klem. 1950) on strongly decayed stumps. There is some evidence that the latter community succeeds the former. The decay time of the Pinus stumps is on the order of 16-20 years. The syntaxonomy of Cladonia communities on coniferous tree stumps on the West European continent is discussed.
