Synökologische Charakterisierung und syntaxonomische Einordnung von Carpinion-Gesellschaften Nordkroatiens
The paper presents synecological and phytosociological characteristics of the Carpinion-forests in northern Croatia, Yugoslavia. Phytosociological analysis follows the principles of the Zürich/Montpellier school. The work is based on 241 phytosociological relevés and includes the published literature dealing with similar topics. The alliance Carpinion is part of the order Fagetalia sylvaticae and the class Querco-Fagetea. The croatic forests of this alliance were combined in the areal-geographic suballiance of the illyric oak-hornbeam forests, the Lonicero caprifoliae - Carpinenion betuli. The Lonicero caprifoliae-Carpinenion betuli was subdivided into three associations with different floristic composition and site requirements: Neutrophilic and mesophilic montane illyric forests are dominated by Quercus petraea and Carpinus betulus, with a proportion of Fagus sylvatica. These forests were grouped in the associations Epimedio-Carpinetum betuli and Festuco drymeiae-Carpinetum betuli. Flatland forests of Quercus robur and Carpinus betulus occur on microelevations in the basins of the rivers Sava and Drava and were described as Carpino betuli-Quercetum roboris. The three Carpinion-associations were further subdivided into ten subassociations.
