The dominating vegetation type of the high mountain belt (Piso supracanario according to Rivas-Martínez 1987) of Tenerife is the Spartocytisetum nubigeni Oberd. ex Esteve 73. Its floristic composition and subdivision in three subassociations, a new Spartocytisus-Descurainia bourgeauana-community and the Echietum auberiani ass. nov. are described by 77 relevés taken between 1800 and 2500 m altitude. The community of Cytiso-Pinetum canariensis was recently analyzed by Arco, Pérez de Paz & Wildpret (1987) and Arco Aguilar, Pérez de Paz, Rodríguez Delgado, Salas Pascual & Wildpret de la Torre (1992). Comparing 166 relevés of these two publications with the own relevés in one table proves that the discussed vegetation types belong to two separate vegetation classes: Cytiso-Pinetea canariensis Rivas-Goday et Esteve in Esteve 69 and Spartocytisetea supranubii Schönfelder et Voggenreiter 94. This opinion is supported by a number of distribution maps showing different patterns of characteristic species of both classes.
