The geobotanical data (900 relevés) concerning the hornbeam (Carpinus betulus L.) forest of Roumania are syntaxonomically analysed and synthetically presented. Based on the Dacic and Daco-Balkanic species, considered in accordance with the Zürich-Montpellier school as characteristic to the associations of this geographic area, the following 7 associations have been validly described: Melampyro bihariensis-Carpinetum, Aro orientalis-Carpinetum, Euonymo nanae-Carpinetum, Lathyro hallersteinii-Carpinetum, Tilio tomentosae-Carpinetum, Galio kitaibelianii-Carpinetum and Carpino-Fagetum. Twelve sub associations, based on differential species, were also described. Due to the presence of many regional species in their floristical composition these associations were included in the suballiance Lathyro hallersteinii-Carpinenion Boscaiu et al. 1982, specific to South-East Europe.
