Heinz Ellenberg (1913-1997)
Heinz Ellenberg died in May 1997. With him we have lost an outstanding personality who has shaped half a century of Central European vegetation ecology. He was fascinated by the diversity of vegetation around the globe and was able to transmit that enthusiasm to a large community of students, colleagues and friends around him. His students were fascinated by his clear, captivating lectures which, for many, first awakened their interest in problems of vegetation ecology. Those of us who worked with him, knew him as a stimulating and generous teacher or colleague and a warm-hearted friend.
