Calcareous fens (Caricion davallianae Klika 34) in NE-Germany are subject to a critical decline and highly threatened. Their ecological situation is discussed in the context of the EU-Habitats Directive, which focusses on habitat protection in western and central Europe. Furthermore aspects of palaearctic habitat classification will be discussed as a basis for legal instruments of the EU.
