Calamagrostis canescens which as yet has usually been regarded as an Alnion species is considered here as a Magnocaricion taxon. In shadowy Salix shrubs and Alnus woods merely week and mostly sterile specimens of this grass are to be found. Really Calamagrostis canescens is a plant of open places. Here it occurs in drier parts of the Phragmitetum (Phragmitetum calamagrostietosum canescentis Weber 1978) and moreover it is able to form a plant community on its own in extensively tilled meadows on fen ground. This Magnocaricion community which was described as Peudecano-Calamagrostietum canescentis Weber 1978 from the lake Balksee in NW-Germany (Lower Saxony) is obviously widely spread in North and Central Europe (Sweden, Germany and Poland) although up to now only a few relevés about this community have been published. A synthetic table containin g these records is given.
