In der jungkänozoischen Entwickungsgeschichte der Insel Rhodos lassen sich vier Phasen erkennen. Die paläogeographischen Verhältnisse änderten sich mehrfach grundsätzlich, das Meer drang im Jungpliozän in den heutigen Inselbereich hinein, aber erst im Pleistozän wurde Rhodos in eine Insel transformiert.

Abstract

In the Late Cenozoic history of the island of Rhodos four phases could be recognized. Several times the paleogeographical configuration changed fundamentally; the sea did not invade the present island realm until the Late Pliocene and Rhodos was transformed into an island as late as the Pleistocene.
