This volume of the Bibliotheca Phycologica is an exception in some respect. May be it is the largest book of the series and it is the first discussing the freshwater algal flora of a continent (exclusive of diatoms). Why can be interesting the algae from a remote continent of the Southern Hemisphere in Europe? The authors give us two aspects of the answer: "In most identifications have been made by reference to European or North American algalfloras, a procedure enabled by the putative cosmopolitanism of freshwater algae. It is possible that even gentle force fitting of Australian algae to European or American nomenclature may camouflage the true extent of endemism in the Australian freshwater algal flora."

The main chapter of the book shows all freshwater algal taxa found (published) from Australia. There are no keys ("Dichotomous keys are not provided because it is anticipated that, for most users, the abundant illustrations will be the entry point for identification.") and usually no a brief characterisation of genera. All taxa found have a short morphological description, or notes about their dimension and distribution (like South Australia, Tasmania, etc.). It is regrettable there is no information about the occurrence, habitat-type of taxa. In the plates the algae are shown by one or several drawings.

Several new species are described in the book by one of the authors, by Ling (Strombomonas concertina, Schizochlamys tetradiformis, Xanthidium cordatum, X. reniiforme, Staurastrum cyclops and S. unguiculatum). To have an overview about the Australian freshwater algal flora we summarised the main taxonomic groups and the species rich genera in a table below (more than 10 species in a genus). We are sure; continuing the algal studies in Australia much more taxa will be published from this continent and we hope the diatom flora will be added in the next volume.

I recommend this very useful book for all phycologists, algologists working on freshwater algae all over the world.
