The major program was a cooperative US - West-German aeromagnetic survey over parts of Victoria Land and the western Ross Sea. The United States Geological Survey and the Bundesanstalt für Geowissenschaften und Rohstoffe shared the responsibility for the scientific realisation whereas the National Science Foundation (USA), the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (New Zealand) and the Alfred-Wegener-Institut (F. R. of Germany) supported the expedition logistically. A significant number of the papers in this volume are directly connected with the aerogeophysical program. The layout of the survey is described with special attention given to navigational considerations as well as to geomagnetic activity, both playing an important role for this high latitude and remote survey area. The results of the aeromagnetics are presented in form of anomaly maps of the total intensity of the magnetic field and are discussed by structural interpretation and model calculations. Other geophysical contributions include ice thickness measurements, geothermal investigations, magnetotellurics, and a gravity traverse through a central part of the onshore survey area.

The expedition supported also geological working groups in the Victoria Land/Ross Sea area which primarily investigated geoscientific problems related to the aeromagnetic study: geological studies of the crystalline basement around Terra Nova Bay and the v olcanics of Mt. Melbourne as well as an extensive geological mapping program between the Outback Nunataks and the Reeves Glacier.

Geology and aeromagnetics are presented together and superposed upon Landsat-image maps. In addition, glaciogeological studies and a small number of methodical geophysical experiments were carried out. All these groups have contributed to this GANOVEX IV volume.
