During recent years the study of the geological evolution and hydrothermal activity in young back-arc basins of the SW Pacific has revolutionised our understanding of the complex interaction between tectonic, magmatic, metallogenetic, geochemical and sedimentary processes at convergent plate boundaries. The Lau Basin is a triangular - shaped actively spreading back-arc basin between the Tonga Ridge with the volcanically active Tofua Arc and the dormant island arc of the Lau I Ridge. The North Fiji Basin is a tectonically complex marginal basin located between the Vitiaz Trench in the north, the Vanuatu Island Arc to the west and the Hunter/North Fiji Fracture Zone to the south.

TWO areas in the Lau Basin and two areas in the North Fiji Basin were surveyed in great detail during cruise SO- 3 5 of R.V. SONNE, December 1984 to February 1985, with the special objective to study active spreading zones and hydrothermal precipitates.

In this volume we present the results and interpretations of a I bathymetric (seabeam), magnetic and underwater photographic survey, the litho-mag- neto-bio- and chemo-stratigraphy and tephrochronology of the sediment cores and the petrological, geochemical and isotopic study of volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks. Hydrothermal oxide crusts and sulfide mineralisation of volcanic rocks are described using mineralogical and geochemical methods. A synthesis of the geological evolution and hydrothermal activity in the Lau and North Fiji Basins attempts to explain why the main hydrothermal mineralisation is found on an active spreading ridge in the southern Lau Basin, the Valu Fa Ridge.
