Abstract
The northern Peri-Pampean Sierras act as a climatic barrier leading to the formation of a great variety of wetlands in the Tucumán Province, at the northwestern region of Argentina. The Salí River conforms the main drainage basin of the province. It shows remarkable differences in water quality between upstream and downstream areas, where deterioration results from industrial and urban development. This article focuses on spatial and temporal variations in phytoplankton and water quality in three reservoirs of the province, including their tributaries and effluents. In general terms, the lotic environments had higher species richness and abundance of pennate diatoms, whereas the lentic ecosystems showed a predominance of centric diatoms, Chlorophyta and Cyanobacteria. The reservoirs were classified from oligosaprobic to β/α-mesosaprobic based on their limnological characteristics. In all cases, phytoplankton structure was highly affected by temperature seasonality and anthropic impact.
