Abstract
In order to understand the problem of poverty its historical background must be elucidated. Since in the past most people in Europe were peasants living in small villages, a useful, initial way to examine the question of poverty is to investigate the villagers’condition of life. A basic contribution to this endeavor is to compile a food balance sheet that includes the food energy necessary for a healthy population, the amount of food in terms of calories that was available and the human energy required for the production of the nutriments. This essay is a case-study, incorporating these variables for the village Unterfinning (Bavaria) in 1721.
Kurzfassung
Um das Problem der Armut zu verstehen, muß man sich mit deren historischen Hintergründen befassen. Da in der Vergangenheit der größte Teil der Bevölkerung Europas aus Bauern bestand, die in kleinen Dörfern lebten, ist zur Untersuchung dieses Problems die Analyse ihrer Lebensbedingungen von großer Bedeutung. Um diese beurteilen zu können, ist eine Evaluation der Ernährungsbalance wichtig, die vor allem auf drei Faktoren beruht. Diese Faktoren sind: 1. der Kalorienbedarf einer gesunden Bevölkerung, 2. die Deckung dieses Bedarfs durch die Nahrungsmittelproduktion, 3. der hierfür benötigte Energieaufwand. Die vorliegende Untersuchung untersucht diese Variablen im Sinn einer casestudy an der Bevölkerung des bayerischen Dorfes Unterfinning im Jahre 1721.
