Abstract
High temperature strains with temperature optima above 32°C, were found to be common in the genus Scenedesmus section Desmodesmus but this characteristic could not be used for taxonomy on the species level. All of the 7 strains of Scenedesmus perforatus tested were high temperature strains, while in all other species the strains showed different temperature responses. With one exception, only high temperature strains were isolated from tropical climate areas, while these comprise only 50% of the strains isolated from areas of non tropical climates. Strains of different temperature response could be found together in one water but more variability amongst strains could be found when isolated from one water at different years. It was also found that lakes not far from one another each had one strain which often differed in its temperature response from the others. A local race which differs in temperature response and electron microscopical structure could be found in one lake.
