Abstract
Populations of 56 diatom species inhabiting aquatic and subaerial biotopes in Oaxaca State, Mexico, were studied from the point of view of their morphological variability and ecological requirements. Comparisons with other localities in Mexico and adjacent regions, as well as from Central Europe were attempted. Diversity of diatom communities was analysed with respect to environmental factors. A significant correlation between species diversity expressed by the SHANNON index and temperature of water was found.
