Abstract
A simple screening was applied in the laboratory to find out what kind of epilithic algae occurred on the small souvenir-stone collected from Black Mountain, Queensland, Australia. A small piece of stone-surface was transferred into a sterile flask with enriched nutrient-solution and the culture was kept in the shade on a window, under a natural change of day and night for several months. Some colored spots, which appeared on the stone, were scratched and examined microscopially; they were composed of algae and other microorganisms. Blue-green algae with colored sheaths were found as the essential group in the culture and these may be the main cause of the black appearance of the rock.
