Abstract
The species belonging to the genus Leptolyngbya (Pseudanabaenaceae, Oscillatoriales) are characterized by cylindrical trichomes up to 3 µm wide. Numerous criteria mainly based on morphology and ultrastructure of trichomes are used as diacritical features to delimit the genus. Nevertheless, some strains belonging to Leptolyngbya species possess characters that are not completely in agreement with the generic diagnosis. These observations allow a discussion on the homogeneity of the genus and on the definition of the diacritical features. In order to provide a more satisfactory delimitation of the genus, literature data were analyzed and several Leptolyngbya strains were studied by means of light and electron microscopes.
