Electron microscopic characterization of Microcoleus chthonoplastes THUR. (Cyanobacteria)

Hernández-Mariné, Mariona

Abstract

The ultrastructure of Microcoleus chthonoplastes THUR., was examined by scanning electron microscopy, ultrathin sections (both conventional and rapid-freeze fixation and freeze substitution) and freeze-fracture electron microscopy. The cells were mostly occupied by radial thylakoids that varied in number from 55 to 83 in the mid part of the trichome. Paracrystalline inclusion bodies were found. The Gram-negative cell wall layer presented 5-7 circular continuous rows of pores in the region near the septum. Vegetative cells were connected by 150 to 200 microplasmodesmata which appeared in a circular area in the center of the septum. Taxonomic implications are discussed.
