Abstract
This is the first report on the ultrastructure of mucocysts in the common euglenoid species, Euglena oxyuris Schmarda. Scarcely discernible in the light microscope, mucocysts in E. oxyuris are visualized in transverse sections of the pellicle as long, narrow structures, ca. 0.8 µm long and 0.1 µm wide, with alternating electron-opaque and electron-lucent areas. In oblique surface sections, they appear fusiform or flask shaped, with a fibrillar, net-like internal structure. The mucocysts occur in single rows subtending each pellicular stria.
