Abstract
The influence of sediment removal on the structure and dynamics of phytoplankton in the Vajgar fishpond (South Bohemia, Czech Republic) was studied. The amount and structure of phytoplankton, as well as the physical and chemical parameters of Vajgar fishpond, indicate that the degree of eutrophication of Vajgar fishpond is comparable to average fishponds in the Třeboň region. The improvement caused by sediment removal will probably be short-lived. The absence of Microcystis sp. after sediment removal can be explained by the removal of Microcystis inoculum together with the top layers of sediments. Considering the high input of nutrients and phytoplankton from the drainage basin, further changes in the composition of phytoplankton and an increasing eutrophication of Vajgar fishpond is to be expected.
